Definition, aims and principles

These localised deposits of fat do not, as a rule, disappear with diet or exercise. Liposuction is not a method of losing weight: its purpose is not to control weight but to correct the shape of the figure.

Before the operation

Pre-operative tests are carried out as required. The anaesthetist is seen in clinic no later than 48 hours before surgery. Smoking is not an absolute contraindication, but stopping a month beforehand is recommended.

Anaesthetic and hospital arrangements

Depending on the case and the extent of the areas to be treated, liposuction may be carried out under local anaesthetic, under deep local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation, or under general anaesthetic.
